Former FTX executive Ryan Salame recently withdrew his petition to dismiss the indictment against Michelle Bond, just days before a critical court hearing. The move comes after Salame’s legal team informed Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of the Southern District of New York that the petition was being withdrawn “without prejudice” to allow Bond to address the matter in her own legal proceedings. This decision marks a significant development in the ongoing legal saga surrounding the allegations against Salame and Bond.
Salame was sentenced to 90 months in prison in May 2024 after pleading guilty to conspiracy charges, including operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business and making unlawful political contributions. On the other hand, Bond, a former congressional candidate, is accused of conspiring with Salame – her boyfriend – to finance her 2022 campaign unlawfully. The indictment against Bond, unsealed on August 22, 2024, accuses her of conspiring with Salame to make unlawful contributions to her 2022 congressional campaign. These allegations have cast a shadow over both individuals and raised questions about the legitimacy of electoral practices.
Salame’s petition, originally filed on Aug. 21, sought a writ of error coram nobis or, alternatively, a writ of audita querela. However, the government’s response to Salame’s petition was unequivocal, labeling his claims as “demonstrably false” and insisting that the investigation into Bond’s activities was ongoing and separate from the charges he faced. In light of these developments, Salame made the strategic decision to withdraw his petition, paving the way for Bond’s case to proceed independently without the complications that Salame’s petition might have introduced.
With Bond’s indictment now formally docketed and her case moving forward under Judge George B. Daniels, the withdrawal of Salame’s petition has significant implications for Bond’s legal defense. This decision allows Bond to address the allegations against her directly and navigate the legal proceedings without the shadow of Salame’s petition looming over her. It also underscores the complexity of the legal maneuvering in high-profile cases involving alleged financial crimes and political corruption.
The withdrawal of Ryan Salame’s petition represents a strategic shift in the legal strategy surrounding the indictment against Michelle Bond. By allowing Bond to address the allegations against her independently, Salame has taken a step back to ensure that the legal proceedings proceed smoothly without further complications. This development underscores the intricacies of high-stakes legal battles and the impact of strategic decisions on the course of justice.
